It would not be merely nostalgic to mourn the passing of Tom WICKER; his life is an historic reminder to all of us how much a professional reporter can contribute to our understanding of the world around us.

Threats to editorial independence are everywhere, and the problem is that they are so hard to identify and and the results usually impossible to specify. But the mere assertion is enough to cast huge doubt in many directions.

Many people tend to regard the printed part of today's newspaper world with derision, contempt, or just not regard it at all. Nevertheless, this news from Manroland says as much about where newspapers stand today as anything I've seen recently. If the newspaper model is to continue to include an element of printing, someone needs to produce presses.

This is a very important and highly troubling move that needs to be resisted not only by the newspapers of South Africa, but by newspapers everywhere. Follow the Mail & Guardian coverage here. I am not sure if this is the latest version of the legislation.

Suing a newspaper is a serious move, wherever and by whomever initiated, requiring a response not always limited to the newspaper being sued - in this case, Le Figaro.

There remains great strength not just for newspapers, but for all who consume what newspapers produce, when newspapers represent themselves as acting on behalf of the people whom they serve. This innovation is a great step forward toward opening up the process of what makes a newspaper a newspaper. How many other chances do we get to see a lot of raw material professionally discussed and an informed opinion reached based on that analysis?
